Overview
John Gregory, who is a seventh son of a seventh son and also the local spook, has protected the country from witches, boggarts, ghouls and all manner of things that go bump in the night. However John is not young anymore, and has been seeking an apprentice to carry on his trade. Most have failed to survive. The last hope is a young farmer's son named Thomas Ward. Will he survive the training to become the spook that so many others couldn't?

Nel XVIII secolo Madre Malkin, potente strega regina imprigionata dal mago maestro Gregory, riesce ad evadere in corrispondenza del periodo di Luna rossa. Vuole soggiogare quanta più terra è possibile ma subito si scontra con l'uomo che l'aveva imprigionata e ne uccide l'apprendista. Inizia così per Gregory la ricerca di un nuovo discepolo che trova in Tom Ward, settimo figlio di un settimo figlio. Tom viene introdotto al mestiere di cacciatore di streghe e poi gettato subito nell'azione. Sulle loro tracce però arriva una strega apparentemente meno potente e meno convinta che stringe un legame con Tom. Lei appartiene al clan di Malkin (è figlia della sorella) e benchè odi gli uomini, non vuole combattere quello di cui è innamorata e ricambiata. Nel grande scontro i due giovani cercano una terza via scoprendo che anche il maestro Gregory, decenni prima, aveva avuto una storia d'amore finita male con Malkin, dalla quale è nata gran parte della sua malvagità.
